Program of Hospice Care
The primary goal of hospice is to teach and assist family and/or friends to care for the patient at home.

Hospice care is initiated by contacting the hospice office which will send a representative to meet with the patient and family. Referrals are usually made by the primary physician, but can also be made by family members, friends, clergy, or health professionals.

Caregivers will be taught how to provide any needed home care. Although the goal of hospice is to encourage the patient to be cared for at home through participation of the family, if a patient is in need of acute pain and symptom control, he may be admitted to the hospital.

The heart of the hospice program is the specially trained volunteer who provides emotional and physical support for both patient and family through a wide variety of services. The volunteer may relieve the family for short periods, run errands, baby-sit or assist in many other ways.

The volunteer gives bereavement support to the family for at least 13 months.
